Vivo covers 2.5 thousand cities with 3G

Vivo announced to have reached 2.5 thousand cities with 3G. The target is to cover 2,832 cities in 2012.

In April expires the deadline for operators to cover cities > 500 thousand inhab.

In the end of April 2010, was expired the deadline for operators to cover with 3G all the capitals and cities with more than 500 thousand inhabitans (44 cities in the total).

Vivo, Claro, Tim and Oi declared they had met the targets. An evaluation carried out by Teleco in operators' web sites on 09/03/2010 pointed out the missing cities:

Oi: 3 cities (Manaus, Macapá and Boa Vista)
Claro: covered all the cities
Tim: covered all the cities
Vivo: covered all the cities

Note: The cities of Aparecida de Goiânia, Ananindeua and Belford Roxo are out of the list because they had less than 500 thousand inhabitants in 2006 when the operators accepted the coverage deal.

Besides other punishments, those operators that didn't cover these cities on time won't have the guarantees offered during the auction which will sell the remaining 3G frequencies. The coverage have to be done in the frequencies of 1.9/2.1 GHz.

Teleco updates the information about 3G coverage monthly based on data available in operators web sites and also based on information sent by the operators.
