Claro leads growth in August; Oi got negative net adds in Region I

Brazil ended August 2009 counting 164.5 million mobile accesses and density of 85.9 cell/100 inhab. The number of prepaid cellulars continued to grow more than the number of post paid cellulars and reached the participation of more than 82% in the total of cellulars.

Net add of 2.6 million mobile accesses in the month were inferior to the amount gotten in Aug/08 (3.1 million), however, it was aligned to Teleco's projection which indicates net adds of 25 million cellulars in 2009.

For the first time in the year, Claro led cellular growth with net adds of 818 thousand mobile accesses, confirming it more aggressive position in the 2nd semester of 2009. Claro led cellular growth on 2008, but in the first semester of 2009 the company was surpassed by Oi and Vivo in net adds (more details).

In a month that has a celebration day (Father's Day) operators selling subsidized cell phones (Claro, Vivo and Tim) got advantage again. Oi didn't repeat its performance of May (Mother's Day) when the company overcame the others in net adds (more details).

August/09 confirmed the trend observed in the previous months (more details) which indicated that Oi would grow aggressively in Region III (São Paulo), but losing participation in its region of origin.

Indeed, Oi presented net adds of 202.9 thousand mobile accesses in Region III (SP) and -27.2 thousand in Region I.

Important metropolitan areas like Rio de Janeiro (Area Code 21) and Belo Horizonte (Area Code 31), that presented net adds of -5.4 thousand and -3.7 thousand cellulars respectively, contributed to this performance in Region I.

The biggest impact, however, came from the Brazilian North area, where Oi presented net adds of -129 thousand cellulars in Aug/09.

Oi, which in 2007 reached the leadership in the North area by the acquisition of Amazônia celular, is nowadays in the 3rd position behind Tim and Vivo.

Oi is failing to act aggressively in Region II, presenting net adds inferior than Claro, Tim and Vivo's in the last two months.

Oi remains leader in net adds in the accumulated of the year, but the company must improve its performance in region I and II in the next months in order to keep itself unreachable by other mobile carriers.

You could ask:

  • Which carrier will lead cellular growth in Brazil in 2009?
  • Why is Oi having low growth in regions I and II?
  • Can Claro repeat its August performance in the next months of 2009?
  • How 3G coverage affect this climate?
  • Can we wait for a Christmas with more aggressive promotions?
