Vivo leads mobile growth in the quarter; Oi loses market share in regions Regions I and II

Vivo conquered Net Adds leadership in the 3rd quarter of 2009 (3Q09), what didn't happen since 2Q08.

Vivo reached this result after leading growth in Sep/09. Claro's and Tim's results were very close in September and in the quarter.

Oi led mobile growth in São Paulo (Region III) in the quarter, but the company presented negative growth in Region I and it didn't grew significantly in Region II (BrT).

In this quarter, in Region I, Oi lost the leadership in market share for Vivo in Minas Gerais and in the Area Code 86 (Piauí) for Tim.

Despite the low performance in 3Q09, Oi remains the Net Adds leader in the accumulated along the year, with 4.8 million mobile accesses, followed by Vivo (3.9 million), Claro (3.5 million) and Tim (3.2 million).

One of these causes for Oi's low growth is the high churn presented by the operator (3.8% in 3Q09). In 2Q09, it reached 3.5% while the Brazilian average was 2.9%. This represents a monthly loss of abou 1.3 million cellulars. Oi's policy for chips sale and the participation of prepaid in its base (84%), higher than other operator's, contributed to this churn.

You could ask:

  • Which company is going to lead mobile growth in 2009?
  • Why isn't Oi growing in Regions I and II?
  • What should operators do in order to control churn in 4Q09?
  • Will 3G growth in 4Q09 affect this market share scenario?
  • O crescimento da 3G no 4T09 afetará o cenário de market share?
