Claro, third in the Brazilian market share ranking, leads in three of these five area codes. Oi is the leader inside the densest area code (71).

Vivo, Brazilian market share leader, leads inside the 5th most dense area code (11) and TIM leads inside the 10th (48 - Florianópolis).

This board is a sample of the Brazilian diversity and of how regional difference can affect operators' results. In the following we analyze the competition for market share inside these areas.

Oi and Claro fight for the leadership in Salvador

Oi and Claro are in a fierce competition for the cellular leadership in Salvador.

Vivo and TIM, first carriers to break into this market, got the 4th and 3rd positions.

Claro leads Brasilia

In area code 61 (Brasília), Claro leads with large advantage. TIM, Oi and Vivo face strong competition for the 2nd position.

Claro's leadership is threatened by TIM inside area code 12 (São José dos Campos)

In Vale do Paraíba (area code 12), Claro's leadership is being threatened by TIM'd growth.

Claro leads inside area code 62 (Goiânia)

Area code 62 shows a situation very similar to the one found in area code 61 (Brasília). Claro leads with large advantage, Vivo is 2nd. TIM and Oi fight for the third position.

Claro leads inside area code 11 (São Paulo)

Area code 11 shows a different situation in area code 12. It's the only one (of the five area codes analyzed) in which a Band A operator (1st to break into the market) keeps the leadership, even though TIM is likely to threaten this leadership still in 2011. Claro and Oi fight for the third position.

The situation is different in five less dense local areas in Brazil with Vivo leading in four of them and TIM in one of these carriers.

You could ask:

  • How to explain the regional differences in cellular market share?
  • Why do these area codes present higher cellular density?
  • How the possession of more than one chip can affect market share inside these local areas?
