Internet Users in Brazil

* population of 10 years old or more which accessed the Internet, at least once, from computer, in some placel (home, work, school, free or paid access place, other people's house or any other placel) 90 days before the interview.

There's no precise statistics about the quantity of internet users in Brazil. The most complete research was done by PNAD in 2005 which searched 408 thousand people and 142.5 thousand homes with 32.1 million internet users in 2005 (21% of the population between 10 years or more).

Teleco chose a different way to check the quantity of Internet users in 2006. It was considered population growth but it was kept the penetration of 21% Internet users between 10 years old or more.

Other informations:

• Research realized by Ibope indicated that the total of people with internet access in any place (home, work, schools, universities and other places) was 39 million in Sep/07.
• The Núcleo de Informação e Coordenação (NIC) from Comitê Gestor de Internet (CGI) (Internet Indicators in Brazil) realized in 2005 and 2006 research with around 10 thousand interviews using the same criterion of PNAD. NIC's research predicted that 24.4% of the population with more than 10 years old accessed the Internet in the last 90 days in 2005 and 27.8% in 2006. This percentage would be 43.5 million internet users in 2006.
• UIT 42.6 million the quantity of Brazil internet users in 2006.

The accesses to the Internet can be done from home, work, school, free or paid access places, other's people house or any other place.

Internet Home Users

IBOPE/Net ratings follows the number of internet home users in Brazil. According to this research in december 2005 there were 18.9 million users with access in their houses, in which 12.2 million had already accessed the Internet in December of 2005. The following table presents these datas.

Internet Users in public places

Brazil has 6 million people that access the internet exclusively from public places (paid or free), they are divided in:

• 4.4 Million people access the internet exclusively from paid public places, for example, Cibercafés and Lan Houses, at least twice a week and spend between R$ 10 and 15 per month. Between them, 42% are class A and B and 40% class C.
• Between 1.6 million that access web from free places, 42% are Class C and 22% classes D and E.

This is the result of "Public Internet" research, Ibope/NetRatings realized in July 2006. The research heard 16 thousand people in nine metropolitan brazilian regions- São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Fortaleza, Salvador, Distrito Federal and Recife.
