In 10/24/2008, Oi officially started its commercial operation in the State of São Paulo. In its pre-launching campaign the company sold more than one million chips, 500 thousand of them were activated, according to the operator. Falco, Oi's president, believes it's possible to reach two million clients by the end of the year. Until 10/31/2008, who acquires an Oi's chip costing R$ 20,00 or two chips for R$ 31,00, will win a bonus of R$ 20,00 a day to make Oi-Oi, Oi-fixed telephone, long-distance calls using 31 or messages.

In 10/03/2008, Oi announced the beginning of its commercial operation in the State of São Paulo in October 24th 2008.

Oi purchases Amazônia Celular

In 12/20/2007 was announced Amazônia Celular's sale to Oi for R$ 120 millions.

Vivo, which had acquired Telemig and Amazônia Celular, sold Amazônia Celular for Oi for R$ 120 million. With this acquisition, Oi got to be leader in the North Region reaching 37.5% of market share, followed by Tim (33.1%) and Vivo (29.4%). Claro might start to operate in the North Region in 2008. In 03/04/08, Anatel approved the acquisition of Amazônia by Oi.

Anatel authorized the transference of Tele Norte Celular Participações S.A.'s stock control, company that controlled Amazônia Celular, for Telemar Norte Leste S.A., controller of Oi. Tele Norte Celular Participações S.A.'s shares, now owned by Telpart Participações S.A., will be first acquired by Vivo Participações S.A.'s that will sell to Telemar Norte Leste S.A.

By publishing of Anatel's act in the Union Official Daily (Diário Oficial da Unoão), in 03/07/08, the authorizations for use of radio frequencies owned by Amazônia Celular were extinct, but may be used during the transition period which will last until 18 months.

Oi announced that intends to make a public offer (OPA) to acquire all Tele Norte Celular's and Amazônia Celular's preferred and common stocks in the market.
