Japan is the country with more 3G UMTS cellphones, counting 83 million in 2010.

Korea and the United Stated hold the biggest quantity of cellphones 3G EVDO.

3G (UMTS) Nets in Commercial Operation

The first WCDMA to start in commercial operation was NTT DoCoMo (Japan) in 2001. Then (2002) came Softbank (former Vodafone), also from Japan. From 2003 on started operating the first WCDMA nets in Europe with “ 3”. In the United States the first to start operating was AT&T (former Cingular) in 2004.

The first HSDPA network to start commercial operating was AT&T’s, in 2005. In 2006, 70% - of the 2005 existing nets - implemented HSDPA and 31 of the 48 WCDMA nets that started to operate on that year also implanted HSDPA in 2006. In 2007, only 4 of the 53 new WCDMA nets that started operating in that year weren’t also HSDPA.

The first HSPA+ network to start commercial operation was Telstra's, with download peak rate 21Mbps, in Feb/2009, in Australia. In the same year 45 other networks began to operate. In the world there are already 141 HSPA+ networks operating commercialy.

The first LTE network to start commercial operation was TeliaSonora's in Dec/2009, in Sweden and Norway. Today there are 37 LTE networks operating commercialy in 23 countries.

On September 18th/2011, AT&T launched its first LTE services in five cities of the United States: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Chicago. The operator expects to cover other 10 cities until the end of the year.
