| Cell phone sales in the world in 2011 |
In 2011, unit shipments increased 13.8%, reaching 1.55 billion units in 2011.
Nokia's sales dropped 7.9%, counting 417,1 million units in 2011. This fall happens due to the transition of operational system, what affected the sales of Symbian line models.
Lumia models were initially sold, in Dec/11, to clients in Europe, Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapure, South Korea and Taiwan. And even having low sales volume it showed good initial acceptance.
Nokia's sales were encouraged by dual-SIM models sold in emerging markets, such as in Asian Southest.
However, even after this drop Nokia managed to remain on the top of the ranking, followed by Samsung, which sold 327.4 million units in 2011.
Samsung's growth was encouraged by Galaxy smartphones.
Apple, sold 93.1 million iPhones in the year.
Apple's growth was a result of the intense demand for the iPhone 4S.

The total of cell phones from other providers present variations between many sources which estimate this total. From Strategy Analytics the total of others were 184.3 millions, lesser than estimated by IDC (202.9 millions). In 2006 the values are closer 196.7 and 197.8 millions. In 2005 other represented 197.4 millions (SA) and 213.1 millions (IDC). |
