Definition of Multimedia Communication Service (SCM)

 

The telecommunication services, provided per operators of communication datas, can be divided in three groups:

  • Rent of circuit of datas (TDM) or virtual circuits in networks packs ( ATM,FR or X.25) to corporative networks.
  • Services of networks datas to the corporative market.
  • Circuit to access the internet, with ADSL offered by fixed telephony operators ( Velox, BrTurbo, Speedy) , by Cable TV operators or with access through radio ( wireless).

To provide these services an operator needs an authorization of Service of Communication Multimedia (SCM) outorgated by Anatel.

 

Multimedia Communication Service (SCM) is a fixed telecommunication service of collective interest, provided in national and international areas, in the private regimen, that makes possible the capacity of transmission, emission and reception of multimedia informations (datas, voice and image), using many ways, the subscribers inside of a service provider area.

 

SCM substituted SLE- Specialized Limited Service of Networks and Circuits, and nowadays Anatel doesn't give permission to these modalities of SLE.

The main operators that provide services of communication datas in Brazil using proper infrastructure ( facility based) are:

Others

Impsat, Telmex (ex-AT&T), Geodex, Diveo (Rádio) and Iqara.

Cemig Telecom

 

Cemig Telecom, Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais S.A.'s subsidiary offers optical network for telecommunication services in the state of Minas Gerais using CEMIG infrastructure.

 

Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais' business model is "CARRIERS's CARRIER", in other words the company provides network in fiber for telecommunication operators that are willing to increase its area of operation inside the state of Minas Gerais or simply want to provide service to final clients without investing in their own networks, choosing to rent them. Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais is authorized by Anatel to explore Multimedia Communication Services (SCM).

AES Eletropaulo

 

AES Eletropaulo Telecom and AES Com, telecommunication operators owned by AES Brazil group, registered billing of R$ 51 million in the third quarter of 2009, with growth of 20% over the same period of the previous year. Company's net profit reached R$ 18 million, 14% higher than 3Q08. AES Eletropaulo Telecom and AES Com have an optical network of 4,700 kilometers.

 

 

Geodex

 

Geodex has an optical fiber net of 11 thousand quilometers and was sold in Jul/07 for R$ 52 million to UBS, Deutsche Bank and Meridiana Interprises. The company was property of a group of shareholders led by GP.

 

Impsat was acquired by Global Crossing, its revenue in Brazil in 2004 was US$ 33.5 million.

Anatel doesn't give authorizations to SLE modalities.

 

Sercomtel and Embratel still have ADSL service. This last one provides an ADSL service (called Click21JAH), in Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre.

Broadband internet is still offered by the providers:

  • Radio access providers. The main company is Neovia that acquired Directnet in Nov/05. In 2005, it counted 35 thousand residential clients, more than 1,000 corporative clients. Neovia's billing hit R$ 30 million in 2005.
  • 3G cellular as Giro (Vésper/Embratel)
  • Solution with radio and fiber access such as ALOL and Planetarium in Minas Gerais.
  • Via Satellite, such as StarOne's Easyband, Ragio and BRATv.

Broadband internet connections available in Brazil are offered by providers classified in:

  • ADSL, offered by fixed telephony operators using telephone cables.
  • Pay TV, offered by cable pay TV operators using cable modem or wireless by MMDS operators.
  • Other providers that use in general radio connection direct to the client or residential area where its is distributed through local network.
  • Providers that offer broadband via satellite.
