The company Telecomunicações Brasileiras S. A. – TELEBRAS was created on November 9th 1972, according to the authorization written in the law number 5.792, of July 11th 1972, assigned to the Brazilian Communication Ministry.

Telebras was the holding of Brazilian telecom companies that were privatized in 1998.

In 2010, through the decree number 7.175/2010 which implements the Broadband National Program (PNBL), the Brazilian government assigned to Telebras the following tasks: implement the private communication network for Federal public administration, support public broadband policies, besides provide infrastructure and support networks to telecommunication services provided by private companies, states, Brasília (Brazilian capital city), cities and nonprofitable organizations.

On December 31st of 2014, the government had directly 57.61% of the ordinary stocks with vote and 47.40% of the total capital.

The Company's main source of income after privatization came from financial investments.

Between 2010 and 2016, Telebras implemented a fiber network infrastructure (backbone) measuring approximately 22,480 km in length, with a capacity of up to 1.6 Tbps, 80% on power transmission lines in OPGW cables and gas pipelines.

Coverage is expected to provide services in 462 municipalities directly covered by the Telebras network and a further 180 covered by partner providers, covering approximately 46% of the Brazilian population.

Signed in November 2013, the Acquisition and Supply, Integration, Launch and Assisted Operation Contract for the Geostationary Satellite System for Defense and Strategic Communications with VISIONA TECNOLOGIA ESPACIAL S.A. continues in full and regular progress and the launch of the artifact was scheduled for the last quarter of 2016.
