  • The amount collected in the last 5G frequency auction in Band C ranged from US$ 0.4/MHz/POP in Italy to 0.05/MHz/POP in Spain. This would imply that Band C revenue in Brazil (300 MHz at 3.5 GHz) would range from US$ 25 billion to US$ 3 billion;
  • Nokia has announced it has reached 63 5G contracts, of which 18 involve network deployments in operation.

IoT

There were 9.5 billion IoT devices connected at the end of 2019, according to IoT Analytics estimates. The 3 main drivers are:

  • A burst of consumer devices (particularly Smart Home)

  • Growth of devices connectivity in China

Implementations are happening on the scale of hundreds of thousands or even millions of devices. Recent examples are (IoT Analytics):

  • 1 million NB-IoT meters in Sweden
  • over 100 thousand ThyssenKrupp connected elevators
  • over 0.5 million Tesla cars
  • 380,000 Maersk connected refrigerated containers deployed on ships worldwide

Growth until Nov/19, 5G and other highlights

Eduardo Tude

Growth in the year until November

  • Net additions accumulated up to November 2019 confirm the growth trend for fixed broadband and a decline in prepaid, fixed telephony and pay TV subscribers.
  • The growth in postpaid, driven by M2M and the migration from prepaid to control plans has not yet been enough to overcome losses in prepaid and stabilize the mobile base in Brazil. This is expected to happen in 2020.
  • Fiber accesses were responsible for the growth of fixed broadband, overcoming losses with accesses of metallic pairs (xDSL).

5G

  • MCTIC may publish an ordinance opting for the coexistence of 5G in the 3.5 GHz band with the satellite reception satellite dishes of open TV in the C band. (Value)
  • France has started the auction process for 5G frequencies in the 3.4GHz to 3.8GHz range. France's four existing operators will be able to purchase 50MHz each at a fixed price of € 350 million. Other 10MHz blocks will be sold at auction with an initial price for each lot of € 70 million. The authorities hope to raise at least € 2.2 billion. All lots are associated with coverage commitments, with licenses lasting an initial period of 15 years.
  • Samsung announced that it sold about 6.7 million Galaxy 5G smartphones in 2019, which would represent more than half of the global 5G smartphone base.
