5G, Fiber, Oi and more

5G

  • The cleaning of the 3.5 GHz band may delay the advance of 5G in Brazil in its first year (2022), but from 2023 onwards, there will already be more municipalities with 3.5 GHz released than those that 4G had in its second year of operation in Brazil.
  • In 2022, the expansion of 5G will be made in the 2.3 GHz band.
  • Claro put its 5G network in Brasilia into commercial operation, using the 2.3 GHz frequency.
  • Vivo would also have entered into operation (soft launch) in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (Tecnoblog).
  • Brazil gets to Christmas with 39 5G smartphones approved by Anatel.
  • Anatel and Embraer will evaluate a possible interference from 5G in the 3.5 GHz band with planes. This problem is occurring in the United States where the band used by 5G goes up to 3.98 GHz. In Brazil the use is up to 3.7 GHz.
  • GAPE, the group that will monitor the School Connectivity Projects using the resources of the 26 GHz band auction, met for the first time and approved its bylaws.

 

Fiber

  • Unifique has announced the acquisition of Guaíba Telecomunicações e Sistemas e Informação Ltda (Guaíba Tecnologia).
  • DESKTOP announced the acquisition of Infolog TI Tecnologia Ltda. (“Infolog”), through its subsidiary Netion Soluções em Internet Via Rádio Ltda. Infolog has 16 thousand broadband customers in the Baixada Santista region.

 

Oi

  • Anatel's competition superintendence approved without reservations or conditions the sale of Oi's fiber infrastructure (V.tal) to funds led by BTG as controller.
  • The Final Balance of Oi's Financial Cash was reduced by R$ 71 million in Oct/21, totaling R$ 2,765 million. R$ 254 million were invested in the month.
  • Oi's ON shares had losses of 9.8% in the week and PN decreased 3.8%. The IBovespa showed losses of 2.2% in the week.

 

Other highlights

  • Anatel approved an arbitration process with Sercomtel, as it already happens with Telefônica, Claro and Oi.
  • The decision on the release of the Starlink low orbit satellite constellation was left for February, with the request for views by the councilor Emmanoel.

Oi

  • Oi's market value of R$4.9 billion reflects the fact that the amounts it is likely to receive from the sale of Oi Móvel (R$16.5 billion) and V.Tal (R$12.9 billion) are close to its net debt, which reached R$29.9 billion in 3Q21.
  • The Final Balance of Oi's Financial Cash was reduced by R$71 million in Oct/21, totaling R$ 2,765 million. R$ 254 million were invested in the month.
  • Oi's ON shares had losses of 5.7% in the week and PN shares of 5.0%. The IBovespa showed losses of 0.5% in the week.

 

5G

  • Algar started operating its 5G network on the 2.3 GHz frequency in the cities of Uberlândia, Uberaba and Franca.
  • Of course, Ericsson and WEG installed a 5G private network at WEG's factory in Santa Catarina.
  • GAPE, the group that will monitor the School Connectivity Projects using the resources of the bid for the 26 GHz band, will meet for the first time this week (Dec. 21st).
  • Gaispi, which will take care of cleaning the 3.5 GHz band, will meet again only at the end of January.
  • A study carried out by Deloitte for the Ministry of Economy pointed out smart cities as the area in which 5G solutions are being developed in the country, according to 66% of the 71 actors of the national 5G ecosystem interviewed.
  • T-Mobile, the US operator, reached the milestone of 500 thousand accesses fixed broadband 5G (FWA), offered in the frequencies of 2.5 GHz and 600 MHz.  The service costs US$ 50 per month and the installation is done by own user.

 

Other Highlights

  • The 17% limitation for ICMS established by the Brazilian Supreme Court should remain for 2024. The majority of ministers voted for this period.
  • The São Paulo City Council approved its new Antenna Law, with rules similar to those of the Federal Law. Licensing waiver for mini Cell Sites, including multifunctional posts, is maintained. In return, operators will deploy 286 cell sites in the next 12 months in areas indicated by the municipality and councilors.
  • The nominations of Carlos Baigorri as president of Anatel in the position of advisor to Leonardo Euler, with a mandate of 5 years, and of Artur Coimbra, in a vacancy with 3 years remaining in the mandate, were published in the Official Gazette.
  • Anatel approved the Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC) with Vivo in the amount of R$ 434.104 million.
  • Anatel's Board of Directors meets extraordinarily this Monday to address the foreign satellite authorization process for Starlink, Elon Musk's low-orbit satellite constellation.
  • The Ministry of Communications Working Group in charge of preparing proposals for the modernization of the Conditional Access Service Law (SeAC) published its report.
  • Padtec, together with BNDES, concluded the structuring of a R$ 100 million credit rights investment fund (FIDC), with the objective of improving access to credit for its customers.

Accesses in October, 5G, Oi and more

Accesses in October

  • Claro led cellular growth in the first 10 months of the year (Jan-Oct/21) with net adds of 6.5 million cellulars, followed by Oi (4.3 million), Vivo (4.1 million) and TIM (606 thousand).
  • Claro led postpaid growth without M2M and M2M and was second in prepaid growth, just behind Oi.
  • Anatel updated the number of fixed broadband accesses in September to 40.2 million, the values published for October are underreported and it will be necessary to wait for the next update to have more accurate values.

 

5G

  • Brazil already has 835 thousand 5G cellulars operating on DSS, of which 715 thousand are from Claro and 120 thousand from TIM.
  • Ericsson and Huawei will provide TIM's 5G network (RAN).
  • Anatel approved the regulations of the Monitoring Group for the Implementation of Solutions to Interference Problems in the 3,625 to 3,700 MHz band (Gaispi) and appointed its members and those of the Monitoring Group for the Costing of School Connectivity Projects (GAPE).
  • The participants of the initiative 5G Brazil consortium were unable to acquire a lot of frequencies in the 5G auction, but now they intend to create an MVNO.

 

Oi

  • Oi Fibra will start commercial operations in Guarulhos by the end of the year.
  • Oi's ON shares raised 2.4% in the week and PN shares 2.2%. The IBovespa appreciated by 2.8% in the week.

 

Other highlights

  • The Brazilian Supreme Court decision to limit the ICMS rate for telecom services to 17% may start to be applied in 2022. The voting process to determine the date was resumed by the Court and will be decided in a virtual vote until Dec. 17th.
  • The telecom industry's revenue grew 12% in 2021, reaching R$ 43.9 billion according to Abinee estimates.
  • Ascenty opened yet another Data Center in Hortolândia and another in Rio de Janeiro, now having 19 Data Centers in the country.
  • ALLREDE incorporated more five providers: Logtel, Ti5 Telecom, Skill.Net, OBTI and K&G.
  • IX.br reached the peak of 20 Tbit/s of Internet traffic exchange, 43% more than registered in the same month of 2020.

5G

The companies that acquired frequency lots in the 5G auction presented the guarantees of execution of the commitments and signed the authorization terms. They will have to pay a total of R$ 4,861 million in cash or in installments within 20 years.

 

5G in the World:

  • 27% of cell phones in China are already 5G. It has 450 million 5G cell phones, more than 70% of the global total.
  • 5G will represent about 49% of the world's cell phones in 2027 (Ericsson Mobility Report)
  • 20% of cell phones in Brazil will be 5G in 2025 (GSMA)

After testing 80 use cases, Telefônica Tech selected three to be marketed on its network in Spain in 2022

  • automatically guided robotic vehicles for use in locations including warehouses
  • remote maintenance systems using technology including smart glasses
  • drones for site surveillance.

Amazon launched a private vertical 5G networks service in the USA.

 

Oi

Emmanoel Campelo will be the rapporteur of the Oi Móvel sale process on the Anatel board.

Oi's ON shares posted losses of 4.5% in the week and PN 4.2%. The iBovespa appreciated 2.5% in the week.

 

Other highlights

The GDP of information services, which includes telecommunications, grew 9.6% in 3Q21, compared to the last 4 quarters with the 4 previous quarters, and 2.4% compared to 2Q21. Brazil GDP 3.9% and 0.1% respectively in these comparisons.

Americanet acquired Omni, which has about 25,000 customers in the Midwest, for R$ 60 million.

Aneel is carrying out a public consultation to reassess the regulation on sharing poles between electricity distributors and telecommunications service providers. The deadline for contributions is February 2nd, 2022.

The bill for the new law on antennas in Belo Horizonte was approved in the first round.

Conexis and other industry entities published an open letter calling for a national strategy to combat theft and theft of Telecom equipment.

José Gustavo Gontijo becomes the MCTI representative on the Internet Steering Committee.

President and partner at Teleco (consultancy company), works since 2002 as analyst of Telecom market, coordinating consulting projects, publishing weekly articles, preparing sector reports and presenting workshops.

Telecom Engineer (IME 1978) and MSc. in Telecom Engineering (INPE 81), Tude is member in the Mobile World Congress’s judging commission for the Global Mobile Awards, in Barcelona, and was also a visiting specialist professor at Unicamp.

Tude had many positions in the management of Telecommunication companies in areas like Mobile Systems (Ericsson), Optical Networks (Pegasus Telecom) and Satellites (INPE).
