Telecom leaders in Brazil in the 2Q23

 

The leaderboard in Telecom in Brazil presented a change in the 2nd quarter of 2023 (2Q23), with Desktop returning to the leadership in revenue growth.

Claro led 5 indicators, followed by Vivo (3), Desktop and Vero (1 each company).

In the 1st quarter of 2011 Teleco started to monitor the performance of the Telecom Groups in Brazil through selected indicators.

From the end of 2021, Teleco started to consider as Competitive those defined by Anatel as Small Providers (PPPs). Anatel considers Vivo, Claro, TIM, Oi and SKY as large providers.

Since 2Q22, leadership in the indicators is attributed to the leading company that discloses the indicator, regardless of size. The results of the Competitives as a group will also be presented in the analysis.

Large providers and the following Competitive companies that publish their results were included in this analysis: Algar, AmericaNet, Brisanet, Alares, Desktop, Vero and Unifique.

In Apr/22, the sale of Oi Mobile to Vivo, Claro and TIM was concluded, according to the division agreed between the parties. The data in this commentary considers the incorporation of Oi Mobile's cell phones by these operators since 2Q22, with revenue being appropriated by each operator since April.


The following shows the results for each indicator. 

 

1) Revenue: Vivo was the leader in the 2Q23

Vivo led in net revenue with R$ 12.7 billion in 2Q23, followed by Claro (R$ 11.3 billion) and TIM (R$ 5.9 billion).

Considering the announced merger of Vero with Americanet, the new operator would occupy the 7th position, surpassing Brisanet and Desktop.

Vivo also led in mobile revenue (R$ 8.9 billion) and Claro in fixed revenue (4.9 billion).

Teleco estimated at R$ 42.7 billion the total net revenue of the providers in 2Q23 and at R$ 11.0 billion the revenue of the Competitives group.

 

2) Revenue Growth: Desktop led in the 2Q23

Desktop led net revenue growth in 2Q23 (46.5%), closely followed by Americanet (40.7%) and Vero (40.6%). The growth in total net revenue was estimated by Teleco at 7.2%.

 

 

3) Vivo kept the leadership in Mobile Market Share

Vivo kept the leadership but lost market share in the 2Q23.

 

Claro gained market share and led net adds in the quarter.

TIM has being losing market share since 2Q22, when it acquired Oi Mobile.

 

4) Vivo led Mobile Revenue in the 2Q23

Vivo, Claro and TIM presented growth in mobile net revenue in the 2Q23.

 

 

Comparing 2Q23/2Q22, Claro presented the highest growth (12.6%), followed by Vivo (10.4%) and TIM (9.7%).

The growth of mobile net revenue was estimated by Teleco in 10.2%.

 

5) Fixed: Claro is the Market Share leader

Claro led market share (26.1%) of fixed services (Fixed Telephony, Broadband and Pay TV) with a total of 21.9 million accesses in 2Q23 and reduced the loss of market share. Oi competes with Vivo for the second place.

 

 

Competitivas group had market share of 35.4% un the 2Q23.

 

6) Fixed: Claro is first in revenue

Claro led net revenue from fixed services with R$ 4.9 billion in 2Q23, ahead of Vivo (R$ 3.8 billion) and Oi (R$ 2.5 billion).

 

Considering the announced merger of Vero with Americanet, the new operator would occupy the 6th place, surpassing TIM, Brisanet and Desktop.

Net revenue of fixed services increased 5.8% in 1Q23/1Q22.

 

7) Market Share of Fixed Broadband: Claro

Claro led fixed broadband market share in 2Q23, with 9.8 million accesses and 21.2% share, followed by Vivo (14.1%) and Oi (10.7%). Claro and Vivo gained market share while Oi continued to lose.

 

 

Competitives totalized 24.2 million fixed broadband accesses and 52.1% share from total accesses in this quarter.

All Competitives have a market share in Brazil of less than 5% and 12 of them together have an 18.2% market share of fixed broadband accesses.

After the announced merger of Vero with Americanet, the new operator would have 3.1% market share, close to Alloha's.

 

8) Pay TV Market Share: Claro

Claro kept Pay TV leadership followed by Sky and Oi in the 2Q23.

 

 

Pay TV lost 1.71 million subscribers in the 2Q23/2Q22.

 

9) Market Share of Fixed Telephones: Claro was the leader

Claro (29.3%) remained in the leadership with 7.3 million landlines, but has been losing market share. Oi comes with sharp loss in market share. Vivo is the only one that has been growing.

 

 

Fixed telephony lost 1.66 million subscribers in the 2Q23/2Q22.

 

10) Profitability: Vero led EBITDA Margin

Vero (53.8%) led EBITDA margin in the 2Q23, followed by Desktop (50.0%) and Unifique (49.7%).
