Why Internet has lesser users than Cellular ?
The quantity of Internet users is lesser than cellulars in the whole World. According to UTI there were in 2005 2,137 million cellulars and 954 million Internet users in the World. (More details).
In Brazil the "National Research of Sample of Domiciles "
(PNAD 2005), of IBGE showed that, in 2005, cellular was present in 59.3% of the houses, while the Internet access in just 13.7%.
A comparison of the PNAD 2005 results with similar research realized by European Union ( E- communications household survey), shows that the bigger "gap" between Brazil and developed countries is the access to the Internet.
In Brazil, TV is present in 91% of the houses, and in the countries of the European Union 97% ( in 48% through waves of terrestrial radio). The insertion of the cellular telephones in the houses, surpassed fixed telephones in Brazil and Europe. In Brazil, however, the percentage of the houses only with cellular (23%) is bigger than European Union countries (18%). In the access to the Internet the insertion in the brazilian houses (14%) is lesser than European Union (40%).
Cellular and Internet users in Brazil
Suplemental research of PNAD 2005 indicated that in that year, between people with 10 years old or more 56.1 million (38%) used cellular for personal use and 32.1 million (21%) had had access the Internet, at least once, through computer, in some place (home, work, school, centers of access (free or paid) , other people's house or any other place) 90 days before the interview.
The difference between 56,1 million cellular users of the PNAD and 79,5 million existing cellulars, according to Anatel, at the time of the research (Sept/05), is because of people that have more than one cellular, as well as inactive cellulars. PNAD don't include people with less than 10 years or so, that use cellular in the company and doesn't stop personal use.
The amount of Cellular and Internet users is influenced by Net Income, years of instruction and age of the people, as presented in PNAD 2005. Between these factors, however, the age is the factor that presents more significant differences when it is compared to the insertion of the Internet and Cellular in Brazil
As you can observe, the insertion of Internet surpasses Cellular in the ages of 10 to 14 years. The descending curve of the Internet starts in the ages of 18 to 19 years while cellular continues growing until the ages of 25 to 29 years. This curve suggests that the insertion growth of the Internet is more strong associated with the new generations than the Cellular.
It is expected from the insertion of the user of data a similar behavior to the presented by Internet with a stronger growth between young people. After all, it is difficult to imagine that an user of data through cellular also is not an Internet user.
Another interesting result pointed by PNAD 2005 is the insertion of service between young, is bigger between women than men.
