Oi and Tim start 2008 in the top of the competition

2008 started as a heated year, reaching net adds much superior to the one presented in 2006 and 2007.

In January and February the net adds of Vivo, Tim and Oi were from twice to four times bigger than the ones presented in the same period of 2007. Claro's grew 18.5%.

In the last 12 months (from March/07 to February/08) 22.9 million cellulars were added to the total of cellulars in Brazil, projecting a growth for 2008 superior than 20 million net adds estimated in the beginning of the year by Teleco . (more details).

Tim leaded growth in Jan/08 but didn't repeat the same performance in Feb/08. The company's growth, much superior to what other operators have gotten in January, served to increase to 1.5 million the difference that separated Tim from Claro. However, it's not likely to be repeated in the next months, due to the pressure received by Tim from Telecom Itália to make better profitability, according to information released to press. Promotions of cheaper minutes and Tim Casa Flex (a service that combines fixed telephony and cellular) have being pointed as Tim's actions for this growth.

Oi leaded growth in Feb/08, despite being present only in Region I, where is concentrated 49.3% of Brazilian cellulars. Oi surpassed other operators in net adds in 11 of the 16 states that form Region I. The operator lost for Vivo in Espírito Santo, Amazonas, Pará and Roraima.

In some Area Codes (DDD), such as 21 (Rio de Janeiro), 31 (Belo Horizonte), 71 (Salvador), 81 (Recife) and 85 (Fortaleza), Oi got more than 100% in net adds, because its competitors had negative growth.

This climate suffers little changes by the incorporation of Telemig by Vivo and Amazônia Celular by Oi.

By these results, Vivo (including Telemig) and Claro lost market share in January and February. On the other hand, Tim and Oi gained.

Brasil Telecom presented a good performance in Jan and Feb, reaching a market share of 3.6% in Feb/08. The company presented net adds in Region II of 217 thousand cellulars, being surpassed by Tim that presented net adds of 264 thousand cellulars in this region.

Finally, Tim leaded cellular growth in São Paulo (Region III) in Jan-Feb/08, counting net adds of 336 thousand cellulars, against 235 thousand of Claro and -11 thousand of Vivo. This advantage was gotten mainly in the metroplitan region of São Paulo (11) where Tim got 74% of its net adds in Feb/08.

The 3G launch in 6 Brazilian capital cities still didn't produce significative effects in Claro's growth. In Feb/08, Claro leaded growth in only one local area of these 6 capitals cities (Porto Alegre - 51). In 4 of them, the growth was negative and in São Paulo (11) the company had net adds of 36 thousand cellulars against 101 thousand of Tim.
