Claro surpasses Tim and becomes leader in net adds in 2008
Claro leaded the cellphone growth in August/08 with much higher net adds in comparison with other operators.
In a month which has a celebration date (Father's Day), Claro and Vivo, both including in their promotions low price devices, got a toehold once again. (more details).
Teleco's projections indicated that Claro would overcome Tim in September/08 (more details). However, in the end of August/08 Claro's cellular base was bigger than Tim's.
By this result, Claro took over the second position holding a market share of 25.092% against 25.087% of Tim.

Kept the current tendencies, Claro might consolidate itself in the second collocation in the next months and pursue to decrease the distance to Vivo. The difference between Vivo and Claro was 6,952 cellphones in Aug/08. Reduce this difference will be a hard task to Claro. Despite being leading in net adds in the year, with 4.5 million of cellulars, Vivo comes in second with net adds of 4.3 million of cellphones in 2008.
Tim, as foreseen in Teleco's commentary (more details), declared through a press release, that: "considers the participation in market important, though has always prioritized the profitability."
Oi would be leading in net adds in the year, with 5.1 million of cellphones, if had already incorporated BrT. Holding a market share of 19.34%, Oi/Brt would, yet, be far from Tim.
This competition caused a record growth of cellphones in Aug/08, with net adds of 3,090 thousand cellulars. In the year, the accumulated net adds have already counted 17.4 million of cellphones, against 11 million in the same period of 2007.
Brazil finished Aug/08 counting 138.4 million cellulars and a density of 72.9 cell/100 inhab.
Teleco's projection indicates that the country will end up 2008 counting more than 149 million of cellphones and 77 cel/100 inhab. It's possible, however, by Oi starting operation in São Paulo and Vivo in the Northeast region, that the 150 million cellphones mark will be surpassed in this year.
