Claro and Oi’s fight for the leadership in cellular growth in 2008

Tim, Oi, Vivo and Claro alternated in the monthly net adds leadership in 2008.

Tim started the year leading but reduced its growth in de second semester of 2008. Oi was always in the fight for leadership, counting the biggest share of net adds in 5 of the 11 months in the period from January and November of 2008. Since May, Vivo and Claro got in to this competition in a stronger way, motivated by the device promotions for Moth’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Father’s Day.

Claro, counting net adds of 7.2 million cellulars accumulated until Nov/2008, and Oi, holding 6.9 million, are in the top of the fight for the leadership in net adds in 2008.

Claro, which was the leader in net adds in 2007 counting 6.1 million cellulars, will have to struggle in order to conquer this leadership in 2008. The company has series of device promotions what is an advantage for operators that sell devices with subsidized prices.Oi, in the other hand, will depend on its performance in São Paulo to conquer leadership. Oi reached 1.2 million cellulars in its arrival in the State, in October, and 462 thousand cellulars in November. It would have been easier for Oi to conquer this leadership if the company had already incorporated Brasil Telecom.The fierce competition between operators in 2008 is taking to a record cellular growth. The net adds accumulated in the year already count more than 26 million and 31 million in the last 12 months. The promotions carried out by operators point out for a cellular growth superior than 4.7 million in this Christmas time. Brazil might finish the year holding more than 152 million cellulars.
