Three groups lead the Telecom market in Brazil
The market for telecommunication services in Brazil is headed by three groups, together they had billing of R$ 124 billion in 2008. They are:
Telefonica is the biggest Telecom Group in Brazil with gross revenue of R$ 45.2 billion in 2008. This group is the leader in cellular through Vivo. Oi/BrT is the leader in fixed accesses and broadband. Net leads in the Pay TV segment.

The following presents an analysis of the table above.
Gross Revenue: Telefonica surpasses Oi/BrT in 2008
Telefonica/Vivo's group surpassed Oi/BrT's in billing in 2008.
Oi/BrT's gross revenue grew 7.3% in 2008, while Telefonica's increased 11.0% and the group composed by Claro/Embratel/Net grew 17,4%. The smallest stake of Oi/BrT contributed to this result (more details).
In 2008, cellular operators' revenue grew 14.1% and fixed operators' 7.1%. Besides, Telefonica's gross revenue increased 8.7%, whilst Oi Fixed's grew 0.4% and BrT Fixed's 6.2%.
Oi/BrT's strength is based on its position as a leader in fixed telephony and broadband. Embratel and Net are, however, gaining space in both segments.
For the Pay TV market, Net is the leader holding 48.6% of market share. Telefonica (7.5%) and Oi (1%) are pursuing growth in this sector through purchases and licenses to provide service via satellite (DTH).
