Oi leads cellular growth in the first semester of 2009
Oi/BrT leads cellular growth in the first semester of 2009 holding net adds of 3.9 million cellulars.
The expressive growth presented by Oi/BrT in 2009 is due to its expansion to the state of São Paulo, where the company conquered 41.9% of its net adds in the semester (1.6 million cellulars), and more aggressive plans in BrT's region, where reached 28.8% of its net adds. In other words, more than 70% of the net adds were conquered outside Region I.
However, while Oi grew in Region III (São Paulo) and in Region II (BrT's), Vivo and Tim concentrated their net adds in Region I (former Telemar) where these companies got, respectively, 62.3% and 64.2% of their net adds.
With this result, Oi/BrT's market share grew from 19.9% in Dec/08 to 21.2% in ju/09, decreasing the difference between the company and Tim which is in the third position.
Tim, which promoted in 1Q09 a cleaning of about 1 million cellulars in its base, recovered in the second quarter of 2009 (2Q09) with net adds of 1.7 million cellulars. Tim led cellular growth in Jun/09 counting net adds of 681 thousand cellulars.
Claro, which led cellular growth in 2008 (more details), is showing a lower rate of growth in 2009. Its net adds were lower than the ones presented by Oi/BrT, Vivo and Tim in 2Q09.
One of the causes of this result is the rise in Claro's monthly churn from 2.5% in 1Q09 to 2.8% 2Q09. Without this rise, Claro would have presented net adds of about 1.2 million cellulars in 2Q09, this performance would be very close to Vivo's.
Claro also seems to be giving more focus to profitability, without trying a more accelerated growth in the prepaid segment. In 2Q09, its EBITDA margin was kept in 25% and its ARPU in R$ 23. MOU (minutes of use) fell from 95 minutes to 73 minutes in 2Q09.
In the post paid segment, Claro presented 583 thousand cellulars as net adds in the semester (52.7% from the Brazilian total), reaching a market share of 29% in Jun/09.
