Will Nextel join the mobile operators club?

by Eduardo Tude

On December 14th, Nextel is likely to acquire 3G frequencies and officially break into the Brazilian mobile operators club.

In practice, Nextel already joined this club. In other countries where Nextel operates, Trunking service (SME) was already incorporated to the number of mobile accesses.

Brazil ended Oct/10 with 3.2 million SME (Specialized Mobile Service) accesses, about 99.5% of them are Nextel's (more details). It may seem little, if compared with the Brazilian total (194.4 million), but it's a significant amount considering they are all postpaid.

Note that the total of postpaid mobile accesses in Brazil, 37.8 million in Oct/10, is three times bigger than the Portuguese cellular market, bigger than Canadian's and most of the countries in the world. In 3Q10, Nextel had 8.4% of market share in this market of postpaid mobile accesses (Cellular + SME) in Brazil.

Note: Nextel has 99.5% of the SME accesses in 3Q10

In 2010, Nextel's net adds were very close to Tim and Claro's in postpaid, despite covering a much smaller population. Nextel's low monthly churn (1.4%) contributes for this result.

Nextel Brazil is part of NII Holdings, open company which operates in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Chile (more details). Nextel Brazil may become the main NII's operation soon.

Nextel, which uses Motorola's IDEN technology, acquired frequencies for 3G in Chile, Mexico and Peru. So, doing the same in Brazil wouldn't be surprising.
