Which company leads 3G in Brazil? Claro or Vivo?

Brazil finished Nov/10 with 17.6 million 3G mobile accesses, being 13.6 million through handsets (WCDMA) and 4.0 million using Modems and other 3G data terminals.

Claro is the leader in number of 3G accesses via handsets (WCDMA).

Claro led net adds of 3G accesses via handsets in the first 10 months of 2010, being overtaken by Vivo only in Nov/10. A revision based in its cell phone base, carried out in Jan/10, increased in 3.1 million the number of accesses. But, even if we don't consider this month, Claro continues to lead in the net adds of 3G accesses via handsets (WCDMA) accumulated along 10 months of 2010 (Feb-Nov).

According to Anatel, in Sep/09, there were 4.0 million data terminals in Brazil, 2.3 million of them were 3G and 1.7 million had other technologies with speeds below 256 kbit/s. Considering that the new data terminals added to the base were mainly 3G technology, Teleco estimates that from those 5.9 million data terminals in Brazil in Nov/10, about 1.9 million weren't 3G and 4.0 million were 3G.

Vivo led the growth in 2010 with 1.0 million net adds from January to November.

To sum up, Claro is the leader in number of 3G accesses in Brazil for having the biggest number of 3G handsets in its base. Vivo leads in modems (3G data terminals) and in 3G coverage, reaching (in 2010) 1,047 cities, against 402 from Claro.

Vivo is getting good results from its investment in 3G, growth in its data revenue (which represented 21.7% of its gross service revenue in 3Q10), bigger ARPU if compared with its main competitors (R$ 25.2 in 3Q10). Claro doesn't release its data revenue, but the company doesn't seem to be getting the same good results, as its ARPU reached R$ 19.0 in 3Q10, it was less the Vivo, TIM and Oi's.
