Will TIM overtake Claro in market share in 2011?

TIM led mobile growth in 2010 holding net adds of 9.9 million cellulars. It was the double of number gotten in 2009 and a quarter of the total net adds registered in 2010.

Claro, with 7.2 million net adds, reached the 3rd position being surpassed by TIM and Vivo. By this result the difference which separates Claro from Tim fell from 3.3 million in 2009 to 600 thousand mobile accesses in 2010.

Kept this trend, TIM is likely to overcome Claro in market share in the 1st quarter of 2011 (1Q11), as Teleco had foreseen in a previous commentary.

To avoid being overtaken, Claro needs to increase its aggressiveness in prepaid segment, in which Tim got 90% of its net adds in 2010.

TIM's leadership in prepaid segment is associated to aggressive plans like Infinity which offers local and log distance (inside the country) calls for TIM's cell phones for R$ 0.25 by call.

TIM surpassed Claro in prepaid market share in Sep/10 and increased the advantage of 2.1 million mobile accesses in Dec/10.

Kept the current trend, TIM can even overtake Vivo in 2011 reaching the leadership in prepaid market share in Brazil.
