Oi leads mobile growth in the quarter
The competition inside the cellular segment got stronger in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11) and mobile accesses in Brazil presented record growth with net adds reaching 7.6 million accesses in the quarter against 5.2 million in 1Q10.
Brazil ended the quarter with 210.5 million mobile accesses and density of 108.3 cell./100 inhab., accumulated net adds of 31.4 million along the last 12 months.
Oi, which in 2010 presented low growth, with 11.1% of the net adds, turned the table in 2011 by leading growth in February and March.

Oi's big turning happened inside Region I. In 2010, Oi had conquered only 4.8% of the net adds of the region, losing the leadership to Vivo and, later to TIM. In 1Q11 the Oi conquered net adds of 1,044 thousand mobile accesses in the region Region I, staying behind Vivo (1,103 thousand).

Oi showed also a good performance in Region II (São Paulo) recovering the leadership in net adds that had lost to TIM in the second semester of 2010.
Other factor to promote mobile growth in Brazil is the fierce competition between TIM and Claro for the second position in market share Brazil.
The difference between these two operators fell to 427 thousand cellulars in January, increased to 627 thousand in February and dropped again to 589 thousand accesses in March. In 1Q11, TIM presented net adds of 1,821 thousand mobile accesses and Claro of 1,800 mil.

Vivo was the only company to present in 1Q11 smaller net adds in comparison with the figure registered in 1Q10.

Vivo led postpaid net adds in March (272 thousand mobile accesses), surpassing Claro (227 thousand). Both operators led postpaid growth in the quarter each holding 41% of the net adds in this segment.
