Telefonica is the leader in revenue and accesses, GVT leads profitability and growth

 

 

 

The Brazilian Telecom market is going through transformations, with the merger of fixed and mobile operations owned by the main Groups that provide service in the country into one single company.

 

In face of this scenario, Teleco starts to keep track of the performance gotten by these Groups in each quarter through the indicators shown in the table below.

The three biggest Groups in Brazil in revenue and accesses are Telefonica, América Móvil and Oi, but GVT and Nextel lead in profitability and growth in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11).

 

 

Net Revenue: Telefonica leads and América Móvil overtakes Oi in net revenue

 

Telefonica is the biggest Telecom Group in Brazil in revenue (R$ 8.8 billion in 1Q11).

 

Note: América Móvil's net revenue falls to 7.0 billion if considered Claro and Embratel's revenue all together.

 

The three biggest Telecom groups in Brazil are responsible for 75% of the sector net revenue in 1Q11.

 

América Móvil's Group (Claro, Embratel and Net) overtook Oi's in 1Q11. Oi's revenue dropped 7.1% in comparison with 1Q10 (more details).

 

 

 

 

Accesses Market Share: Telefonica is the leader

 

Telefonica's Group leads also the total accesses market share or of the Revenue generation Unit (RGU) in many types of service.

 

 

América Móvil's Group is the second. The carrier surpassed Oi in 3Q10.

 

Vivo is the leader in cellular market share, Oi in fixed telephones and broadband and América Móvil in Pay TV. América Móvil was the only group to increase its market share in the service in which is the leader (Pay TV).

 

 

 

 

Profitability: GVT is the only carrier to have EBITDA margin superior to 40%

 

GVT kept the leadership in EBITDA margin in 1Q11 (41.7%) followed by Nextel (33.9%).

 

 

 

Telefonica's group fell in profitability in 1Q11 due to its performance in fixed telephony (Telesp) with EBITDA margin of 22.2%. The company presented, however, the biggest profit (R$ 1.1 billion).

 

 

Growth: GVT and Nextel have the biggest growth

 

GVT showed the biggest growth in 12 months in accesses (58.6%) and in revenue (45.5%), followed by Nextel (31.8% and 32.1%) and by TIM (24.7% and 13.8%). Oi presented the smallest growth in accesses (6.5%) and was the only one to have negative growth in revenue.
