Claro leads growth in May and is betting on postpaid for not being overtaken by TIM

 

Claro led mobile growth in May and increased the difference which separates it from TIM to 256 thousand mobile accesses.

 

 

 

 

This result, despite being positive, doesn't represent for Claro a change in the trend observed in 2011 which points out that the carrier will be overtaken by TIM in cellular market share until the end of the year.

 

Claro led mobile net adds in May (795 thousand), surpassing Vivo (774 thousand) and TIM (760 thousand) by a small margin, but stayed in the second position in postpaid and prepaid net adds.

 

 

 

 

Claro doesn't follow TIM in prepaid. TIM conquered the second position in this segment in 2010 and opened an advantage of 3.3 million mobile accesses in May/11.

 

 

 

 

Claro is, however, using it performance in postpaid in order to make up for TIM's bigger growth in prepaid. The carrier increased it advantage over TIM in this segment from 2.8 million postpaid accesses in Dec/10 to 3.5 million in May/11.

 

One of Claro's actions to keep the second position in cellular market share is: improve its performance in postpaid net adds, segment led by Vivo.

 

 

 

 

Claro announced, on 06/16/11, that the carrier will resume the focus in 3G by selling smartphones and tablets besides investing R$ 1.2 billion in the construction of its own fiber network of 8,790 kilometers through the whole Brazilian territory.

 

Claro holds the biggest number of 3G handsets in its base (7.8 million), but is in the third position in data terminals market share. Claro accumulated net adds of 50 thousand data terminals in the first five months of the year against Vivo's 343 thousand data terminals.

 

In 2011, postpaid is having a bigger growth in comparison with prepaid. In May, postpaid growth (1.9%) was much bigger than prepaid (1.0%). Postpaid was responsible for 30% of the net adds in the month, a record that may not be repeated in the next months.

 

Other action is increasing its share in prepaid net adds and hope that get back to the competition, inside this segment, in a stronger way, reducing TIM's share.
