79% of the people who have 3G cell phones access Internet

A survey carried out by Teleco for Huawei's Whitepaper of Broadband in five Brazilian capital cities pointed out that 79% of the people who have 3G cellular access the internet.

The survey, that is the result of 1,100 interviews, took place in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Brasília and Recife. The local areas (area codes) where these capital cities are concentrate 30% of the cellulars in Brazil with distribution very close to the Brazilian average.

The survey reinforces the definition of mobile broadband used by Anatel as the total of all accesses via 3G handsets plus data terminals.

The survey showed that in the average of these five capital cities, 62% of the 3G cell phones are Smartphones, in other words, 7% of the total of cellular accesses are 3G Smartphones.

Note: It considers as Smartphones the 3G cell phones that have an operational system, like Android, Symbian, iPhone or Blackberry O.S.
As expected, Internet access is bigger among the users who have 3G Smartphones:
"87% of the users who have Smartphones access Internet, against 67% of those who have cell phones that are only 3G."
This result confirms the operators' strategy in encourage Smartphones sales in order to increase their data revenues.
Users who have 3G/Smartphones cell phones access Internet in an average of 1 hour by day and 5 days a week. Sending and receiving emails are the most used service.

Another important factor for expansion of mobile broadband is the existence of prepaid plans. The survey shows that:
"51% of the users who access Internet through 3G cellulars/Smartphones use prepaid data plans and 74% don't think about changing for a postpaid plan in the future."
Part of the Internet access through 3G cellulars/Smartphones is done through WiFi:
"38% prefer to use WiFi and 5% use only WiFi."
The percentage of those who use only WiFi among the ones who have a tablet reaches 28%. Tablet is the most desired object to be acquired in the next 6 months by 53% of the interviewed people.
Finally, the user is looking at fixed and mobile broadband as services that complement each other, not as competitors:
" 90% of those who have fixed and mobile broadband would like to keep using both services."
