Brazil ended November/2011 counting 236 million mobile accesses and 33.1 million net adds from Jan-Nov/11. Net adds in the least 12 months reached 38.5 million accesses. Brazil is likely to end 2011 with 42.8 million fixed telephones having growth in net adds over 2009 and 2010. The incumbents lost 1.3 million fixed telephones in the first 11 months of the year. Most of these accesses migrated to packages (Embratel/Net and GVT).
Fixed broadband net adds increased, but Brazil is still likely to end 2011 with density inferior to 10 fixed broadband accesses by 100 inhabitants. The biggest growth happened in mobile broadband. Brazil may end 2011 having 38.1 million mobile broadband, what is equivalent to 19.5 accesses by 100 inhabitants and 17.4 million net adds in the year.
Pay TV growth occurred mainly in DTH (via satellite) with SKY and Embratel. DTH overtook cable TV and was responsible for 85% of the pay TV net adds gotten in the year.
Besides the growth of services, the items that also deserve to be highlighted in 2011 are:
In 2012, the expectation is related to the consolidation of América Móvil Group by merging Claro, Embratel and Net, despite the combined offers involving services provided by these three companies.
In the end of 2011, Anatel authorized the first MVNOs operations (Porto Seguro, Sermatel and Sisteer), but the start up in the market will happen in 2012.
The competition in cellular became strong leading to fall in the average minute price. An important offer made for some operators was equate the price of on-net local calls and long distance. In general, the performance registered in 2011 by the main groups of the sector was positive:
The Government adopted a more open strategy towards the Broadband National Plan, including the operators. Telebrás sold the first accesses of its backbone.
2011 was also marked by the maturation of mobile broadband services and by the the growth in the use of smartphones and tablets that became the Christmas dream.
