Will Claro get back into the fight for the cellular leadership?

Claro is growing less than Vivo and TIM since July/2011, when the company lost the second position in cellular market share.

Most of the time, along the period between Jul/11 and Apr/12, Claro's participation in the total of net adds was below to 20%. In May/12 Claro led the net adds of the month with participation of 38.1% in the total of net adds registered in the month.

This can be a signal that Claro is back into the fight for the cellular leadership in Brazil.

One of the explanations for Claro's low growth in this period says the operator was cleaning its base. In fact, the operator's month churn increased in this period.

If Claro finished to clean its prepaid base and now is ready to increase, the same doesn't seem to be happening in postpaid. The operator showed negative net adds (-82 thousand) inside this segment.

Other signal, that Claro is reorganizing itself, was the revision carried out in the operator's base of 3G devices, which drove the carrier to the leadership in mobile broadband in Brazil (more details).

Either way, win the lead in net additions in the coming months may be more difficult than it was in May.

Claro was the only carrier to have net adds in May superior to the figure gotten in the previous months of 2012. In May, Vivo and TIM's were the smallest of the year.
