Vivo leads in five indicators and TIM in one in 2Q12

 

In the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12), Vivo led in five of the seven cellular indicators that Teleco keeps track of. TIM led growth.

It wasn't possible to evaluate the indicator Quality, because Anatel suspended (in April) the report of the indexes of Quality Targets.

 

Since 2007, Teleco follows cellular operators' performance in Brazil measured through these seven indicators.

 

We present below the results for each one of these indicators in 2Q12.

 

 

Market Share: Vivo leads and gains market share in the quarter

 

Vivo, the biggest cellular carrier in Brazil, ended 2Q12 counting 75.7 million mobile accesses and market share of 29.56%.

 

 

 

Vivo was the only one, from the four main operators, to lose market share in the quarter.

Vivo and TIM gained market share in the year, Claro and Oi lost it.

Vivo is the market share leader inside 3 regions, in 12 of the 27 states (it includes Brasilia) and inside 30 of the 67 area codes.

Claro lost 1.2 percentage points in prepaid market share in 2Q12.

 

 

Growth: TIM leads net adds in the quarter

 

TIM led growth in the quarter, even though reporting net adds (1.7 million) smaller than the figures gotten in the previous quarters.

Despite of the leadership in total of cellulars, TIM was placed in the second position in prepaid net adds and was third in postpaid net adds.

 

 

 

 

Claro led prepaid, but presented negative postpaid net adds.

 

Oi led postpaid, surpassing Vivo.

 

The drop in Vivo's net adds occurred inside prepaid, segment in which the operator cleaned its client being overtaken by TIM.

 

 

Net Revenue: Vivo keeps the advantage over other operators

Note: Oi reports only the revenue for handsets sold in retail (personal mobility). Claro's revenue, which doesn't eliminate common revenues with Embratel, doesn't include long distance.

 

Vivo kept the leadership by holding revenue of R$ 5.1 billion in 2Q12 and growth of 0.4% in comparison with 1Q12.

Operators' handset revenue were very impacted by the reduction of VUM in this quarter.

 

Oi had the biggest revenue growth in the last 12 months. The carrier reports only retail revenue (personal mobility), which doesn't include corporative handsets.

 

 

ARPU: Vivo kept the leadership in 2Q12

 

 

Vivo kept the leadership in ARPU stimulated by data revenue growth. Vivo's data ARPU (R$ 6.0) represented 27.4% of total ARPU (R$ 21.4) in 2Q12.

Oi's ARPU is calculated not making eliminations of revenues from Oi Fixed, the opposite happens to the other operators.

 

 

The minutes of use (MOU) in Brazil increased 2Q12, when compared with 1Q12 and 2Q11.

Profitability: Telefônica/Vivo leads EBITDA Margin

 

Vivo/Telefônica Group kept the leadership in profitability in 2Q12, getting the results of the integration of the mobile and fixed operations.

 

 

 

 

Oi Group stayed in the second position.

Note: Since 2Q11, modifications were made in the criteria count the profitability of the indicators calculated by TELECO, staring to be considered the group's EBITDA margin gathering mobile and fixed operations. This modification was necessary because Vivo, Claro and TIM report this indicator only this way.

 

 

Quality: Anatel suspended the report of indicators

 

In April, Anatel stopped to report the information about the accomplishment of quality targets, what made impossible to analyze this indicator for 2Q12.

In July, Anatel adopted new quality criteria to punish TIM, Claro and Oi by suspending cell phone sales. After the return of the sales, which happened in 08/03, Anatel announced that will monitor the following indicators quarterly by state.

Vivo was the leader in 3G coverage, reaching 2,831 cities in 2Q12, followed by Claro (929), TIM (530) and Oi (346).
