The change of chip drove growth of cellular sales in 2Q12
Cellular showd los growth in the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12). Net adds of the quarter (5.3 million mobile accesses) rwere 38% smaller tha what was registered in the previous quarter.
Cell phones sales (handsets) fell too. In the first semester of 2012, local prodution dropped 25.4%, importation fell 55% and exportation 49%.
These figures could indicate deceleration in the growth of the Brazilian cellular market, due to market saturation or economic slowdown, but there was the fact that the sales of cellular lines (gross additions) increased 5.4% in 2Q12. 34.0 chips were activated, more activations if compared with the previous quarter.

Chips sales (gross adds) countinue to grow in 2Q12, but net adds dropped due to the growth in the cancellation of lines. Purchasing of a new chip from other operator, or as many times from the same operator, leads to the cancellation of the old chip.

28.7 million cellulars were cancelled in 2Q12. Churn, month average of cancellations, reached 3.8% in this quarter.

Vivo, which was the leader in cancellations (8.5 million), was the second in sales (9.5 million) and the last in net adds.

Due to the strong competition in cellular segment, less than 25% of the operators sales mean net adds.
The change of operator happens in a frenetic pace in prepaid, as a result of the possession of more than one chip and carriers' promotions.
The suspension of TIM's sales during nine of the thirty-one days of Jul/12, caused negative net adds for the operator in all the states where the suspension took place. Impeded from selling, TIM didn't get to make up for the cancellations.
