Samsung overtakes Apple and consolidates itself as number 1 in smartphones in the world

Samsung overtook Apple in smartphones sales in the world for the third consecutive quarter and consolidated itself as the main supplier of this type of device.

In the third quarter of 2012 (3Q12) Samsung sold 56.7 million smartphones, more the double of Apple's sales (26.9 million).

Samsung reached, for the first time, the leadership in smartphones sales in the world in 3Q11, but was again surpassed by Apple in 4Q11, due to the success gotten by iPhone 4.

The same will hardly happen in 2012. The iPhone 5 launched in September by Apple didn't show the same level of innovation of the previous models and this can affect sales.

For the first time, since Apple iPhone was launched in 2007, the number of iPhone owners saying that will buy the next cell phone of the same brand has declined. Survey carried out by Strategy Analytics showed that only 75% of the iPhone owners in the Western Europe say that are likely to buy Apple's next cell phone (it reached 88% in 2011). In the United States this percentage dropped from 93% in 2011 to 88% in 2012.

The signs of Samsung's supremacy don't stop here. In 3Q12, according to Strategy Analytics, Samsung's Galaxy S3 became the smartphone holding the biggest sales figures in the world, overtaking iPhone 4S.

Samsung success is associated to Android, operational system working in 75% of the smartphones sold in the world in 3Q12. Samsung held 41% of the Android smartphones sold in 3Q12.

Apple's advantage considering applications is decreasing. Android and Apple had in October the same quantity of applications (700 thousand), according to Google. In 2Q12, Android's share of downloaded apps (47%) was already bigger than Apple's (29%), according to ABI Research.

This scenario is affecting Apple's market cap, which had reached the record of US$ 661 billion before the launch of iPhone 5, now dropped to US$ 515 billion (November).

Samsung's advantage isn't only based on the quality of the sold smartphones but also on the revenue with cell phones sale.

Note: Samsung's revenue with cell phones (smartphones or not ) and Apple's with iPhone and services.

In other words, Samsung conquered the leadership in smartphone sales in the world, cellular segment holding the biggest growth, being smartphones 40.4% of the handsets sold in the world in 3Q12.

Despite of being consolidated in the position of leader, it won't be easy for Samsung to keep this status for long time. It's a dynamic market in which the innovation is constant. The competitor below can threaten Samsung's leadership:

A segment very close to smartphones is tablets. Inside this segment Apple leads holding 14 million units sold in 3Q12, but is losing market share for Samsung (5.1 million), Amazon (2.5 million) and others.
