Claro and Vivo are mobile broadband leaders in Brazil

Brazil ended Oct/12 counting 65.4 million mobile broadband accesses, being:

25.2% of the cell phones in Brazil are mobile broadband accesses. More details can be found in the Huawei Whitepaper of Broadband.

 

To evaluate mobile broadband leaders in Brazil, Teleco selected the indicators below.

Claro and Vivo are mobile broadband leaders in Brazil according to the indicators that will be analysed the following.

 

 

Total of Mobile Broadband Accesses: Claro leads

 

Claro is the market leader in mobile broadband in Brazil. In Oct/12 the carrier counted 23.5 million accesses, followed by TIM (18.3 million), Vivo (16.8 million) and Oi (5.5 million).

 

 

According to Anatel's definition, the number of mobile broadband accesses is gotten from counting the quantity of accesses via 3G handsets plus data terminals (Broadband and M2M).

 

The leadership in 3G cell phone devices, that represent 80% of the mobile broadband accesses in Brazil, assured Claro this result.

Accesses via 3G handsets: Claro is first in converting GSM into 3G

 

Claro is the operator, among the four main carriers operating cellular service in Brazil, that is in advantage (over the others) in the process of converting its GSM handsets base into 3G. From the total of accesses via Claro's handsets (excluding data terminals) 31.5% are 3G.

 

 

A Claro lidera também em total de aparelhos 3G (18,6 milhões), seguida pela TIM (17,2 milhões), Vivo (12,5 milhões) e Oi (3,8 milhões).

 

 

Market Share of M2M Data Terminals: Claro leads with large margin

 

Claro is the market share leader in M2M data terminals holding 46.9% of the market, followed by TIM (19.6%), Vivo (17.3%) and Oi (15.5%).

TIM is losing space inside this segment.

 

Market Share of Broadband Data Terminals: Vivo is the leader

 

Vivo is the market share leader in broadband data terminals (modems) holding 47.6% of the market, followed by Claro (29.0%), TIM (12.8%) and Oi (10.6%).

Claro is gaining market share, but is still far behind Vivo.

 

 

Data Revenue: Vivo is the first

 

Vivo leads data net revenue with R$ 1.4 billion in 2Q12. Claro and Oi don't report this indicator.

In 3Q12, data revenue represented 27.8% of Vivo's services revenue. In TIM's ir reached 19.4%.

 

 

 

 

Coverage: Vivo covers more cities than the other three carrier together

 

Vivo is lerader in 3G coverage, reaching 3,012 cities (85.7% of the population) in Nov/12.
