Which provider led pay TV growth in 2012?

Embratel/Net led pay TV growth in Brazil by holding net adds of 1.5 million accesses.

However, the leadership in net adds would go to Sky if Embratel and Net were considered distinct companies.

Embratel/Net continues to lead pay TV in Brazil, but its market share dropped from 54.9% in 2011 to 52.5% in 2012.

After reporting net adds of 1.2 million accesses in 2012, Sky repeated the performance registered in 2011 and amplified its market share, getting closer to Net.

Net, which has 86.8% of the cable TV accesses in Brazil, had its growth limited for not having authorization to expand services to other cities. This restriction gave chance for the expressive growth of pay TV via satellite in Brazil (DTH).

By the beginning of the concession of new authorizations for pay TV (SeAC) assigned by Anatel in the end of 2012, cable TV, and Net particularly, may show bigger growth in 2013.

Oi and GVT betted in DTH to amplify market share. Oi ended the year having 4.6% of market share (+ 1.9 p.p.) and GVT holding 2.6% (+2.4 p.p.). On the other hand, Vivo preferred to bet in IPTV and is likely to have growth again in 2013.

Pay TV increased 27% in 2012, being Mato Grosso the state having the biggest growth (61.0%) and Amapá the smallest (13.3%).
