Claro leads total net adds in January and Vivo is first in postpaid

In January of 2013, cellular growth in Brazil showed continuity of the trends observed in the last quarter of 2012.

Claro led net adds (317 thousand), followed by Tim (254 thousand) and Oi (201 thousand).

Vivo, which adopted new rules to turn off prepaid subscriptions (accesses inactive for 60 days), continued to present negative net adds.

Claro led total cellular net adds in the last 4 months. The operator started the year as main candidate to lead net adds in 2013.

Claro has shown more uniform performance in prepaid. TIM and Oi have alternated high and low net adds.

Vivo presented negative net adds in prepaid along the last four months, but leads postpaid net adds since Aug/12.

Brazil ended Jan/13 holding 262.3 million mobile accesses and density of 132.8 cell./100 inhab. Net adds of 482 thousand subscribers in the month confirm for 2013 the continuity of the drop in cellular growth rate in Brazil, which is felt since the 2nd semester of 2012.

This fall in growth rate has been aggravated by the change in the rules to turn off prepaid accesses promoted by Vivo.
