When will data revenue surpass voice revenue in Brazil?

Voice service (fixed+mobile) was still responsible for 73.5% of carriers revenue inside Brazilian Telecom market in 2012. However, this scenario goes through deep transformation.

Mobile voice revenue overtook fixed in 2010, but didn't increase participation in the total of operators revenue in the country in 2012.

Meanwhile, revenue of other services (Data and Pay TV) grows and surpassed fixed voice revenue in 2012.

The growth of mobile voice revenue was being supported by the accelerated growth of cellular base, despite of the drop in the average price of minute that happens due to the very competitive scenario.

Mobile voice revenue still showed growth (+5.4%) in 2012, however, with smaller growth of cellular base in Brazil, the trend shows that this revenue will present negative growth in the coming years, as what happened with fixed voice revenue (-6.6% in 2012), due to factors such as drop of VU-M and the use of data network for voice communication.

The revenue of other services includes fixed broadband, mobile data and pay TV increased 16% in 2012 reaching R$ 62 billion in the year.

In face of this scenario, there's no alternative left for operators but to increase focus in those other services.

In 2012, fixed broadband presented bigger revenue (R$ 25.0 billion) among no-voice services, followed by pay TV (R$ 20.3 billion) and mobile data (R$ 17.0 billion).

América Móvil (Claro, Embratel/Net) showed bigger revenue for the total of no-voice services in 2012, due to the position of leadership in pay TV. Telefônica/Vivo led in mobile data revenue and Oi in fixed broadband.
