Will Telecom revenue in Brazil continue to increase?

Telecom operators' net revenue in Brazil increased 5.3% in 2012, more than Index of Telecommunication Services-IST (4.87%) but less than General Price Index-Internal Availability-IGP-DI (8.1%) and Consumer price index-IPCA (5.8%).

The result is better when compared with European operators, which have shown negative growth in revenue. The variations in exchange rate can, however, turn the positive growth of Brazilian operations revenue into negative.

Voice net revenue (fixed and mobile), which represented 59.7% of operators net revenue in 2012, showed drop of 2.3% in this year, affected by the fall in fixed voice revenue.

The drop in fixed voice revenue (-8.2%) followed the trend observed since 2009. The growth in mobile voice revenue isn't so accentuated (+2.8% in 2012) and the trends points out to negative growth in the coming years.

It's important for operators to make up for the drop in voice revenue by having growth in other services revenue, mainly broadband (fixed and mobile).

Broadband is the only service in which telecom operators de telecom don't face competition of Over The Top (OTT) players. Skype, Whats'up and Viber are examples of services that hold part of the voice and SMS revenue. Netflix holds pay TV extra revenue.

In this scenario, is essential for telecom operators in Brazil to invest in the construction of infrastructure for high speed broadband (FTTX and 3G/4G), enssure a significant part of voice revenue in the transition for VOIP and make selected bets in the offer of value added services such as Cloud, Connected Home or health.
