Cellular and Internet Users in Brazil

NIC BR published the TIC Domicílios 2012 survey with results about the use of Internet and cellular in Brazil.

In 2012, 84% of the population who was 10 year-old or older was cellular user and 49% was Internet user.

The number of cellular users (84%) was superior to the quantity of people who had cell phone (handset) (80%), even though Brazil had finished 2012 holding density of 133 cell./100 inhab.

Teleco estimates in 1.9 chips by cell phone "owner" in Brazil. This number drops to 1.8 if we don't consider data terminals.

It's also interesting to note that the number of SMS users (54%) overtakes Internet users (49%) and that 20% of the population access Internet by cell phone.

The access barrier is being overcome. The survey points out that 40% of the Brazilian homes had internet accesses in 2012. Mobile broadband has contributed for this result, representing 21% of the total home accesses in 2012.

In order to reduce the difference in the cellular and internet penetration it's also necessary to overcome cultural and schooling barriers that make difficult to promote bigger digital inclusion.

These barriers are overcome by the younger population in which cellular and internet penetrations are closer to each other.
