Competition in the five Brazilian capital cities having the biggest number of fixed broadband accesses
Five capital cities concentrate 28.2% of the total fixed broadband accesses in Brazil.
In 2Q13, Vivo was the market share leader in São Paulo, Embratel/Net was first in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Brasília while GVT led in Curitiba.

In this analysis we consider as fixed broadband accesses the total of accesses operated through Multimedia Communication Service - MCS (Serviço Comunicação Multimídia - SCM). In 2Q13, accesses with speed superior to 256 Kbps represented 95.4% of the total MCS accesses.
The following analyzes the competition for market share in each one of these capitals.
Vivo leads in São Paulo

Vivo leads in São Paulo (Capital city) having 1.5 million accesses in 2Q13, but the leadership is threatened by Embratel/Net (1.3 million accesses).
Vivo's challenge is to increase the offer of accesses having higher speeds through FTTH network. In 2Q13, 68.9% of Vivo's fixed broadband accesses in São Paulo had speeds lower or equal to 2 Mbps, while 68.1% of Embratel/Net's accesses had speeds superior to 2 Mbps.
TIM (36 thousand accesses) and GVT, which is starting to operate in São Paulo, will have a lot of work to disturb Vivo and Embratel/Net that have market share reaching 50.7% and 46.3% respectively in 2Q13.
Embratel/Net and Oi compete for the leadership in Rio de Janeiro

Note: data before 4Q12 weren't presented because they show inconsistent values reported by Oi.
Oi and Embratel/Net compete fiercely for the leadership in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The battle occurs mainly for accesses with speeds between 2 and 12 Mbps, which concentrates 68.8% of Embratel/Net's accesses and 48.6% of Oi.
Embratel/Net (663 thousand accesses) overtook Oi (650 thousands) in 2Q13.
So, like what happens in São Paulo, GVT(55 thousand accesses) and TIM (16 thousands) are distant from the leaders Embratel/Net and Oi that have market share hitting 46.8% and 45.9% respectively in 2Q13.
Embratel/Net leads in Belo Horizonte
![]() |
Embratel/Net is the leader in Belo Horizonte counting 302 thousand accesses in 2Q13 and is increasing its advantage over Oi (263 thousand accesses).
So, as what happens in Rio de Janeiro, the battle occurs mainly for accesses with speeds between 2 and 12 Mbps, which concentrate 61.2% of Embratel/Net's accesses and 44.5% of Oi.
Despite of being far from the leaders, GVT (78 thousand accesses) already conquered market share superior to 10%.
In Brasília the competition targets the second position
![]() |
Embratel/Net leads in Brasília having 199 thousand accesses in 2Q13 and is increasing its advantage over GVT (156 thousand accesses) and Oi (145 thousand), both fight for the second position.
At Oi 50.3% of accesses still have speed superior or equal to 2 Mbps, while 77.1% of Embratel/Net's accesses and 99.8% of GVT have speed superior to 2 Mbps.
GVT leads in Curitiba
![]() |
GVT is the leader in Curitiba counting 191 thousand accesses in 2Q13, but the leadership is threatened by Embratel/Net (172 thousand accesses). On the other hand, Oi (112 thousand) is losing market share.
At Oi 66.7% of accesses still have speed superior or equal to 2 Mbps, while 2 Mbps, while 72.1% of Embratel/Net's accesses and 99.7% of GVT have speeds superior to 2 Mbps.
You could ask:
When will we have a wide offer of speeds superior to 10 Mbps inside the main Brazilian capital cities?
