Which carrier can threaten Vivo's leadership in postpaid?

Vivo is the Brazilian market share leader in postpaid segment and is amplifying its leadership in the last years.

The company was the only one, among the four main mobile operators, to gain market share in postpaid in the period between 2009 and August/2013

Claro was the operators that had the biggest loss in this period. The difference that separates it from Vivo increased from 3.7 percentage points of market share in 2009 to 14 percentage points in Aug/13.

TIM got to keep a stable market share in the period and Oi tried to recover in 2012, but lost market share again in 2013.

Vivo's advantage became even bigger in the last 12 months, when the operator was responsible for 50.8% of the postpaid net adds accumulated in the period.

The image of quality and the offer of bigger 3G coverage is helping to make Vivo's brand stronger inside this segment, because:

The history is being repeated with 4G. Vivo covers 64 cities, more than Claro (18), TIM (7) and Oi (6).

Claro would be the operator having the best position to threaten Vivo in postpaid. In the last 12 months, however, Claro was classified in the 4th position in postpaid net adds. The company didn't lose the second position in postpaid market share for TIM only due to the leadership in M2M accesses.

Brazil goes through a moment of growth in the postpaid base that increased 16.5% in the last 12 months, ending Aug/13 with 56.2 million accesses.

The migration of prepaid users to controlled postpaid plans contributes for this growth. In this period, the participation of postpaid in the total of mobile accesses increased from 18.7% in Aug/12 to 20.9% in Aug/13.
