Vivo and Claro were mobile leaders in 1Q14

 

In the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14), Vivo led in five of the seven indicators followed by Teleco and Claro was leader in two.

Teleco followed, from 2007 to 2013, the performance of mobile operators measured through seven indicators: mobile accesses, growth, revenue, ARPU, profitability, quality and coverage.

 

In 2014, Teleco reviewed the indicators considered introducing indicators about mobile broadband and revenue growth. The indicator about coverage was amplified in order to include many technologies and the indicators about quality and profitability were discontinued. Anatel doesn't report quality indicators as it used to do and the EBITDA margin reported nowadays by carriers involves fixed and mobile operations.

 

The following shows the reports for each one of the seven indicators in 1Q14.

 

 

Market Share: Vivo leads

 

Vivo, the biggest mobile operator in Brazil, ended the 1st quarter of 2014 (1Q14) counting 78.6 million mobile accesses and market share reached 28.68%.

 

 

 

Vivo was the only operator to have growth in market share in 1Q14.

Vivo recovered the leadership inside Region I, overtaking TIM, and kept the market share leadership inside other two regions, in 11 of the 27 federative units and in 28 of the 67 area codes.

Growth: Vivo leads net adds in the quarter

 

Vivo led growth in the quarter, followed by TIM and Oi.

Vivo was the leader after having a good performance in postpaid and presenting negative net adds inside prepaid segment.

 

 

Negative net adds inside prepaid segment was related to a reduction un sales (gross adds) in the quarter (more details).

 

 

Banda Larga Móvel: Claro lidera em market share

 

Claro was market share leader in mobile broadband in 1Q14, counting 40.9 million accesses (35.7%), followed by Vivo having 29.8 million (26.1%), TIM with 27.9 million (24.4%) and Oi registering 14.4 million (12.5%).

 

 

Claro leads the market share of 3G handsets and Vivo leads broadband terminals and 4G.

 

 

Net Revenue: Vivo is the leader

 

 

 

Vivo kept the leadership with revenue reaching R$ 5.8 billion in 1Q14 and growth of 2.2% in comparison with 1TQ13.

Note: Vivo's revenues don't include interconnection revenues from Vivo Fixo. Claro's revenue doesn't include long distance or elimination with fixed tel.

 

The revenues gotten by mobile operators areb suffering the impact from the reduction of VUM promoted by Anatel.

 

 

Growth of Services Net Revenue: Claro leads

 

Claro was leader in growth of services net revenue, followed by Vivo.

 

 

ARPU: Vivo amplified leadership in ARPU

 

The more adjusted base, after the establishment of a more restrict rule to turn off prepaid inactive accesses, contributed to Vivo's ARPU growth in comparison with 1Q13.

Vivo's data ARPU (R$ 8.1) represented 34.7% of the total ARPU (R$ 23.3) in 1Q14.

 

ARPU values informed by operators aren't totally comparable because they use different criteria in its determination:

The minutes of use by client (MOU) in Brazil remained stable when compared with 1Q13.

Coverage: Vivo in the leadership

 

Vivo was the leader in covered population in 1Q14, when we consider the group formed by the three technologies. The company leads in population covered by 3G (86.8%). Claro is first in population covered by 2G (91.5%) and 4G (34.1%).

 

 

Vivo also leads in number of cities covered with 2G and 3G. Claro leads in number of cities covered with 4G.
