How to increase the number of internet users in Brazil?

Brazil had 85.6 million internet users, according to the National Survey on Residences (Pesquisa Nacional de Amostra de Domicílios - PNAD) made by IBGE.

In 2013, internet users represented 49.4% of the Brazilian population who's 10 years old or older.

This participation is small when compared with countries like Unites States (81%) and UK (87%), or with cell phones users in Brazil.

What are the barriers to the growth of internet users in Brazil?

The main barrier to the growth of internet in Brazil is found among the popualtion older than 40 years old, who represented 37.6% of the Brazilian population in 2013.

While 65.2% of the young people between 10 and 14 years old are internet users, only 29.1% of the population who's 40 years old or more uses internet. The same doesn't happen to cell phones.

How to explain the difficulty faced by internet to be used by the population who's 40 years old or more?

In opposition to what happens to young people, the lack of conditions to pay for internet access or the absence of a place to access it don't seem to be important barriers to internet use among the population who's 40 years old or more.

The lack of necessity or interest, associated to the inability to use computers, seems be the main barrier to the internet diffusion among people this age.

According to the survey ICT Residences (TIC Domicílios) 2013, 31% of the cell phones users accesses internet in the previous 3 months. This percentage shows big variations by age.

Once more the lack of necessity or interest is the main reason not to access internet on cell phone.
