Cell phone is becoming synonym of Smartphone

 

2014 can be considered as a milestone for mobile internet in Brazil:

In 2014, 54.5 million smartphones were sold in Brazil, 15.8 million cell phones (not smartphones) and 10.3 million PCs were sold, according to IDC.

This trend was confirmed in 2015. In the first two months of the year 94% of the cell phones sold in Brazil were smartphones (IDC). Buying a cell phone started to mean buying a smartphone.

 

In Brazil, smartphones sales are being stimulated by mobile operators which encourage smartphones purchase in order to increase data revenue.

 

 

 

 

Smartphones are becoming the main device to internet access not only in Brazil but also in the world. In 2014, from the total of cell phones sold in the world, 70.4% were smartphones.

 

All the cell phones that have operational systems are considered to be smartphones. In the world, Android is the market leader by holding 81.4% of the sales (2014), followed by Apple's IOS which has 14.8% of the market and by Windows with 2.7%.

 

Smartphones are part of the ecosystems that involve, besides operational systems, hardware, applications and content such as music, films, videos, courses, etc.

 

According to the study published by Vision Mobile, the platforms that are priority among developers that are exclusively dedicated to the create of apps are: Android (40%), iOS (37%), Windows Phone (8%) and mobile navigator (7%).

Among apps developers who are willing to earn money with apps sales in mobile stores, 17% earn nothing and less than half (48%) gain more than US$ 100 a month.

 

The board of smartphones manufacturers present significative changes in the last years, by the strong growth of Samsung and Apple and also the rise of Lenovo (strengthened by the acquisition of Motorola), Huawei and Xiaomi.

Samsung kept the leadership in smartphones sales in 1Q15 (82.4 million), followed by Apple (61.2 million). Xiaomi may have reached the 3rd position (20 million) overtaking Lenovo/Motorola (18.8 million) and Huawei (17.0 million).

 

 

Apple led revenue (US$ 121 billion) in 2014, overcoming Samsung (US$ 102 billion).

In 1Q15, Apple's revenue reached US$ 40.3 billion and Samsung's hit US$ 23.5 billion.
