The advance of 4G coverage in Brazil

In May/15, 4G technology was present in 159 Brazilian cities. Among those cities there were all the state capitals, cities counting more than 500 thousand inhabitants and other cities that are interesting for operators.

Until Dec/16, more than 50% of the Brazilian population will have 4G access in the city due to the coverage commitments established by the time of the auction of 2.5 GHz frequency carried out in 2012.

Due to the commitments, operators will have to cover with 4G all the cities having:

Until Dec/17, 4G will be available for at least 76.8% of the population in 1,136 cities.

700 MHz frequencies sold in 2014 will be important to improve indoor coverage and cover low density areas, but operator can't wait it to be free to amplify 4G coverage.

According to the current chronogram, 700 MHz frequencies will be available in 1 city in 2016, 52 in 2017 and 197 in 2018. In the rest of the cities, what correspond to 75.8% of the population, these frequencies will be available only in 2019.

The adoption of 4G in Brazil is being fast. The price of 4G smartphones is dropping and the country may end 2015 holding about of 18 million 4G mobile accesses.

In order to amplify this coverage and supply this demand, operators will have to rely on (until 2019) 2.5 GHz frequencies and other frequencies made free due to the decrease in the number of users of 2G technology.
