4G may overtake 2G in Brazil in 2016

4G presented net adds of 7.3 million mobile accesses accumulated from June to October/2015, while 2G and 3G registered negative net adds in this period. Teleco's projections indicate that 4G mobile accesses may overtake 2G in 2016.

The shrinkage of prepaid base accelerated the reduction of 2G base and also reached 3G accesses, which presented negative net adds of -2.4 million mobile accesses between June and October/2015.

On the other hand 4G mobile accesses are increasing and, according to Teleco's projections, will reach about 50 million mobile accesses in 2016, surpassing 2G accesses.

The barriers to 4G growth are being overtaken. The prices of 4G smartphones are falling and 44.4% of the handsets models homologated in Brazil in 2015 were already 4G.

By the end of 2015, 55% of the Brazilian population (469 cities) was covered by 4G. Considering only the coverage commitments, this rate is likely to increase until the end of 2016 and hit 78% in 2017.

4G mobile accesses presented better experience to users and may overtake 3G technology until 2020. The advance of 4G in Brazil isn't faster due to the frequency of 700 MHz which will be available in most of the Brazilian city only in 2016.
