IoT: Claro and Vivo compete for the M2M leadership in Brazil

Internet of Things (IoT) is an evolution of M2M (communication Machine to Machine) in which the connection of intelligent objects allows optimization and automation of processes driving to substantial productivity gains in economy.

In Brazil, Claro and Vivo are fighting for the leadership inside M2M market via mobile telephony. Claro, leader holding 38.6% of the market share, is followed by Vivo (37.5%). TIM, Oi and the other companies lost market share in 2015.

Note: In "others" are included Algar, Porto Seguro and Datora (Vodafone Mobile).

M2M accesses increased 14.6% in 2015, representing 4.4% of the total of mobile accesses.

Vivo led the growth in the year, with net adds of 729 thousand M2M terminals, followed by Claro (491 thousands) and Oi (57 thousands).

The main part of the M2M terminals via mobile access in Brazil is concentrated into two segments:

Local areas 11 (São Paulo) and 19 (Campinas) concentrate 46.4% of the registered M2M terminals in Brazil.

Among the obstacles for the growth of M2M solutions in Brazil there is: Fistel (fee paid for each device). Law sanctioned in 2012 reduced the Installation Inspection Fee (Taxa de Fiscalização de Instalação - TFI) from R$ 26.83 to R$ 5.68 and the Operation Inspection Fee (Taxa de Fiscalização de Funcionamento - TFF) from R$ 13.42 to R$ 1.87. Anatel, however, applies this reduction in Fistel to only 34.7% of the total M2M accesses in Brazil.

Teleco, with partnership of Febratel, is making a study to evaluate the current stage of IoT in Brazil. The results may be released in April/2016.
