Fixed broadband leaders in the Brazilian largest capitals
Note: Competitive operators include all small operators with a market share in Brazil smaller than 5%. They are all SCM operators, except, Claro, Vivo and Oi.
Claro is the leader in fixed broadband market share in seven of the ten largest capitals in Brazil. Vivo, Oi and the group of competitive operators are leaders in one capital each.
Fixed broadband accesses in these ten capitals are growing less than the total in Brazil. The share of these ten capitals in the total of fixed accesses in Brazil fell from 35.5% in 2012 to 28.0 in Apr/20. Fiber is the main technology only in Fortaleza.
An analysis of the competition in each of these capitals is presented below.
1) Claro and Vivo led in São Paulo

Claro and Vivo are the leaders in São Paulo with 86% of the 3.5 million fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (28.3 accesses/100 inhabitants). Competitive operators had 14.1% of accesses, 8.1% of TIM and 0.5% of VIP Telecom. Oi's market share is 0.35%.
Cable is the main technology with 45.6% of accesses, followed by fiber (28.5%) and xDSL (23.5%).
2) Claro is the leader in Rio

Claro is the isolated leader in Rio de Janeiro, with a market share of 51.6% of the 1.7 million fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (25.2 accesses/100 inhabitants). Competitive opertors have 15.1% of accesses, 8.4% of TIM, which surpassed Vivo, 0.9% of MLS Wireless and 0.8% of Estrelar WEB.
Cable is the main technology with 50.1% of accesses, followed by xDSL (29.7%) and fiber (15.4%).
3) Claro leads in Brasília

Claro expanded its leadership in Brasília to a market share of 48.8% of the 734 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (23.8 accesses/100 inhab). Competitive operators had 5.9% of accesses, 2.1% of SKY and 0.6% of Logtel.
Cable is the main technology with 47.6% of accesses, followed by xDSL (34.6%) and fiber (12.8%).
4) The competition for the leaership in Salvador

Oi is the leader in Salvador with a market share of 33.1% of the 441 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the municipality in Apr/20 (15.3 accesses/100 inhabitants). The competition for leadership is fierce, with Oi and Vivo losing market share to Claro and Competitives. Competitive operators accesses had 18.5% of accesses, 5.2% from TIM and 0.82% from Viva Telecom.
XDSL is the main technology with 40.3% of accesses, followed by fiber (29.2%) and cable.
5) Competitive operators lead in Fortaleza

Competitive expanded its leadership in Fortaleza to a market share of 39.1% of the 423 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (15.8 accesses/100 inhabitants). ACON (15.9%), Mob Telecom (6.5%), S&T (2.1%) and SKY (1.9%) are the biggest competitive operators.
Fiber is the main technology with 35.1% of accesses, followed by xDSL (28.7%) and cable (25.6).
6) Claro leads in Belo Horizonte

Claro expanded its leadership in Belo Horizonte to a market share of 55.5% of the 804 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (32.0 accesses/100 inhabitants). Competitive operators accesses had 5.1% of accesses, 0.6% from SKY, 0.6% from Algar and 0.5% from Vero.
Cable is the main technology with 54.7% of accesses, followed by xDSL (28.0%) and fiber (15.3%).
7) Claro i sthe leader in Manaus

Claro is the isolated leader in Manaus, with a market share of 62.1% of the 343 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (15.7 accesses/100 inhabitants). The group of competitive operators ranks second with 19.3% of accesses, 7.1% from SKY, 5.6% from TIM and 1.2% from AXES.
Cable is the main technology with 60.4% of accesses, followed by fiber (24.2%), 4G / LTE (7.1%) and xDSL (6.9%).
8) Claro leads in Curitiba

Claro maintained its leadership in Curitiba, with a market share of 40.1% of the 628 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the municipality in Apr/20 (32.5 accesses/100 inhabitants). Competitive operators had 12.8% of accesses, of which 10.0% were from Copel.
Cable is the main technology with 39.5% of accesses, followed by xDSL (34.3%) and fiber (24.2%).
9) The competition for the leadership in Recife

Vivo is the leader in Recife with a market share of 36.1% of the 237 thousand fixed broadband accesses in the city in Apr/20 (14.4 accesses/100 inhabitants), but the competition for leadership is fierce with Claro (31, 5%). Competitive operators had 11.2% of accesses, being 3.0% from TIM and 1.2% from Provedornet PNT.
xDSL is the main technology with 39.6% of accesses, followed by cable (29.5%) and fiber (25.3%).
10) Claro lidera em Porto Alegre

Claro is the isolated leader in Porto Alegre, with a market share reaching 56.5% of the city's 483 thousand fixed broadband accesses in Apr/20 (32.6 accesses/100 inhabitants). Competitive operators had 7.4% of accesses, of which 1.3% were from AZZA and 0.6% from Algar.
Cable is the main technology with 55.8% of accesses, followed by xDSL (22.2%) and fiber (17.9%).
