The company Telecomunicações Brasileiras S. A. – TELEBRAS was created on November 9th 1972, according to the authorization written in the law number 5.792, of July 11th 1972, assigned to the Brazilian Communication Ministry.
Telebras was the holding of Brazilian telecom companies that were privatized in 1998.
In 2010, through the decree number 7.175/2010 which implements the Broadband National Program (PNBL), the Brazilian government assigned to Telebras the following tasks: implement the private communication network for Federal public administration, support public broadband policies, besides provide infrastructure and support networks to telecommunication services provided by private companies, states, Brasília (Brazilian capital city), cities and nonprofitable organizations.
On December 31st of 2014, the government had directly 57.61% of the ordinary stocks with vote and 47.40% of the total capital.

The main revenue source after the privatization comes from financial applications.
Telebras ended 2014 counting 21 thousand km of active Backbones and 321 stations implemented according to the National Broadband Plan in 412 cities. Through partners providers and the network that provides access to 880 cities.
